Hi ,
I hope you are enjoying an incredible summer (or winter if you are on the other side of
the world).
I spent the last week with family and friends and basically ignoring (most) social media. But, Danny-J and I did manage to record FIVE new podcasts for ‘The Best Life’ podcast, and
they will be out soon, so make sure you are Subscribed HERE so you don’t miss them.
One of them was about being in a rut.
Have you ever been in one? I wonder if you can
relate?
Every year in Best of You (my business coaching course), around June/July, everyone gets tired. The new excitement of building an online business has waned
some, and hey, this stuff is tough, and man, it can be frustrating to try to constantly break through and grab attention and sell stuff!
So everyone kind of goes on hiatus—maybe you’re
feeling that way in your own life right now, like ... the sun is shining, the kids are out of school and well, margaritas are delicious ;) And you just don’t wanna have to have all your shit together right this moment.
Cool, I totally get that.
In fact, for the last 6 weeks, I have been a little quiet too. Creating a new fitness program (more details below) but also just
in a little bit of a rut.
So today, a few quick tools for when you’re feeling a little, “blah”:
Normalize it.
You are not going to be blazing with passion every second. You love your career, but sometimes it can feel like a grind. You love your relationships, but sometimes you just want to ignore everyone. You love your fitness routine, but sometimes you want to change things up and not kill yourself every workout.
Cool. Honor those things and realize that sustained high intensity (in anything) isn’t possible. For anyone. You’re not alone. Nothing is wrong with you. You are human, and believe me, the emotions are universal. Ebbs and flows are 100% normal.
Neutralize it.
Reach out to trusted friends and just … talk about it. Talk it out. Say the feelings out loud so that you can practice being in your emotional integrity: tired, low energy, not creative, uninspired, in a rut, not motivated, apathetic, blah, etc.
Speaking it out aloud doesn’t make you a complainer, it helps you vent and process. And the faster we can acknowledge the reality of where we are, the faster we can move on to the next phase.
Surf it.
Try not to stress out about it. This can be tough because we get anxious thinking we’ll “be this way” forever. What if the motivation to exercise never comes back? (It does) What if our creativity never resurfaces? (It does) What if the feeling of excitement is gone forever? (It’s not)
Often when we’re in the midst of an unmotivated time, we can’t see the forest for the trees and it’s scary!
Understandable. But I’ve experienced these times many times (in business, my personal life and even in fitness) and it always resurfaces. Maybe not in a day or a week, but always within a few weeks or months. Which, in the grand scheme is nothing, and is certainly not long enough to completely derail the ground you’ve gained.
So, relax and take care of you. Stay aware. Talk about it. Write about it.
And then …
Do one small thing.
If you are not motivated to hit Crossfit for an hour of torture (ha!), then go for a walk. Or stretch for 10 minutes.
Or go for a short jog outside.
Resist the temptation to think things needs to be “all or nothing.” Something isn't nothing.
In my experience, even one small effort can cascade into many more actions and like Mark Manson's Do Something Principle dictates, “If you lack the motivation to make an important change in your life,
then do something, anything really, and then harness the reaction to that action as a way to begin motivating yourself.”
If you are feeling in a fitness rut currently, I’m going
to give you an opportunity to do one small thing today.
Ready?
