think of your mental energy like a pie chart

Published: Wed, 12/04/13

Hi ,

I'm holding two free webinars today (details at the bottom of this email) but first, I want to talk to you about something really important...

Our mental space is not infinite. When we choose to spend it obsessing about every morsel of food that passes our lips and every solitary minute of cardio we need to do to achieve that elusive "perfect body," we have very little mental energy for other things, like professional endeavors, creativity, building and nurturing relationships or doing the things we've always wanted to, but never had "the time."

More likely, it's not a time issue, but a mental space issue.

Your mental space is a like a pie chart. When the largest percentage is taken up with food and exercise, there's little available for anything else. No wonder you have a million things you want to do but can never seem to make any headway with them. No wonder you feel ineffective and bogged down. I don't blame you. And in a way, it's not really your fault. It's simply the way you're currently managing your energy.

I was talking to my mom last week and we were discussing how much people love watching TV. We do, don't we? It's the easiest thing! It's actually easier than sitting quietly! It's easier than calling a friend or family member. It's easier than reading a book. It's easier than meditating or taking a hot bath (all things experts say we should do "instead of eating and watching TV"), ha! :)

So why do we love TV so much? Because we don't have the mental space to handle anything else at the end of the day. Our willpower is shot, our patience is thin, and TV "relaxes" us.

Same with food, right? When we get home after a long day, we have zero willpower and we feel the need to reward ourselves for getting through another long day.

Totally get that.

And part of why our willpower is drained has to do with making decisions all day long: Is my breakfast too much food? Will I gain weight? How many grams of carbs should I have at lunch? When should I do my workout? What's my afternoon snack going to be? What will I do if I get hungry later? What if I miss my workout? What if this apple and peanut butter is too much food for 3pm? What snack will I grab on the way home from work because I'm exhausted and deserve something? Is there enough wine at home or should I get more?? :)

You get the picture. We are constantly stressing about food and exercise. And are we getting fatter or thinner today? How many grams? Should I pair this food with this one? And on and on...

But what if there was a way to stop the incessant stress about food and exercise and automate your physique (AYP)? Find a way to eat and exercise that's effortless so that your mental space isn't used up by it? This is a shift in your mental energy management. Not time management, but willpower management.

If you're around today, I'l be talking about how to do this (along with a bunch of other really fun stuff) in a free webinar: 5 Insights for Success in Mindset, Body and Business in 2014. I'd love for you to join me!
